Portland Festival - Sept 11 & 12, 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Hi Crew

By now most of you have attended at least one practice – Welcome to the 2010 Dragon Boat season!

I’m in charge of organizing our participation in the Portland Dragon Boat Festival on September 11th and 12th
Our registration has been secured and the cost per person will be $40.
Accommodations and travel expenses are not included in that fee!

It may seem early, but the season will go by very quickly. For now, I need to know if you are interested in attending.
We have asked all team members with an interest in attending a festival this year to pay for their spot in advance.

The final team roster will be at the discretion of the coaches – your money will be refunded if you are not selected to attend a particular festival.

Even if you are new to the team or to paddling in general, if you have an interest in attending any of our festivals this year (Lethbridge, Banff or Portland), I encourage you to sign up. Team selection is based on team needs - and although we’re always looking to do our best – we want to have a good time too!

So, what I need from you right now is an expression of interest. Even if you have verbally told me you want to come…

If you’re interested, please bring your $40 fee to practices and give to either Karen or Sue. Cheques should be made payable to the Calgary Dragon Boat Club.

I’m also trying to get some idea of accommodations. Let me know if you are willing to share a room and/or if you plan to bring a non-paddling partner.
I’m looking at rooms for September 10th to 13th (3-night stay). Longer/shorter times can be arranged, I just need that info too.

Here’s some other info you might like in order to make up your mind:

**There are no flights by Air Canada on Sunday night that will allow you to catch the final Sunday races and get to your flight on time. (Read you may need some time off on Monday)
I can’t speak for other carriers at this point.

Air Canada offers one direct flight from Calgary to Portland and vice versa per day
- Depart YYC 13:00 and Arrive PDX 13:43
- Depart PDX 14:52 and Arrive YYC 16:52

There are many flights with a stopover in Vancouver that can cater to all kinds of schedules.
There are also a few screwball flights that go to Toronto first and I think we should avoid those at all costs!

Current airfare is about $650 but I expect that we’ll be able to find flights for around $450. I intend to call Air Canada to see if there’s a group discount available.

**Do not book a flight until a coach has confirmed you’re on the roster.

The hotel I have choosen is the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront because they are a Festival supporter, it is within walking distance to the race site and it looks nice.
Here’s a link to the hotel:
http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/pdxor-portland-marriott-downtown-waterfront/

I expect the cost of rooms to be $90-$120 USD plus taxes - to be split between the number of people in the room. Incidentally, I found a very reasonable rate for AMA (AAA) card holders but each card can only be used to book 2 rooms. If you have an AMA card and are willing to reserve 2 rooms on your credit card for me, I’d be eternally grateful. There’s no cost and we can cancel up 24 hours in advance without penalty.

Stay tuned for more info.

I look forward to being on the water with all of you. Let’s work hard and bring home some bling!!!

Cheers,

Lindsay
